Zoology is the branch of biology that deals with animals and animal life, including the study of the structure, physiology, development, and classification of animals.
The primary objective of the department is to impart quality education in the subject of Zoology. Within this broad stream students are taught varied subjects like Cell biology, Ecology, Physiology, Evolution, Anatomy, Genetics and Immunology to name a few, to further their opportunities.
We would like our students to inculcate social responsibilities and serve the society by not only becoming teachers, scientists and environmentalists but responsible citizens who bridge the gap between science and the common man. |

Zoology is offered in various combinations in the Undergraduate program. All combinations include the study of Chemistry and the third subject is variable. The combinations offered at Mount Carmel College are:
• CHEMISTRY, BOTANY AND ZOOLOGY (CBZ) This gives the student a knowledge of the three basic life science subjects, after which she is eligible to take up any PG course such as Zoology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Biotechnology, Botany, Life Sciences, etc .Students are also eligible for a B.Ed. course to become qualified teachers. They can take up any civil service examinations as they have studied basic life science subjects. The students of this combination are sought after for research programs as they are proficient in both Zoology and in Botany.
• CHEMISTRY, ZOOLOGY AND MICOROBIOLOGY (CZM) This is a combination where students train in Microbiology. They are eligible to pursue a PG course in any subjects mentioned above except Botany and a B.Ed. course.
• CHEMISTRY ZOOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (CZE) The students in this combination train in Environmental Sciences. They are eligible to pursue a PG course in any subjects mentioned above except Botany and a B.Ed. course.
• BIOTECHNOLOGY, CHEMISTRY AND ZOOLOGY (BtCZ) The students in Biotechnology also need to specially train in Zoology to better hone their skills.
• CHEMISTRY, ZOOLOGY, NUTRITION AND DIETITCS (NDCZ) This is a vocational course introduced by the UGC. The students study Nutrition and Dietetics along with Zoology and Chemistry.

The Department engages in research work and the faculty and students are equally involved with projects such as: • Bio remediation of mine tailings • Earthworm karyotyping in different species • Effect of vermiwash and soil types on the rate of germination in selected seeds • Currency as formites ( Microbial work on different denomination of currency) • Survey based research work on osteoporosis of different age groups and profession • Biological control methods using Entomopathogenic nematodes and fungi • Classical and molecular studies in Drosophila mutant species
Currently, the Department is engaged in a UGC funded MINOR PROJECT on Gonadal Dysgenesis with polycystic ovaries with or without chromosomal abnormalities to be investigated for molecular markers.
• Effect of mine tailings on certain plants establishing in pot cultures- Credit program by research. Coordinator -Dr. Swayam Prabha
• Women , health and hygiene Coordinator- Mrs. Rufina Sujatha and Mrs. Vimala C.M
• Life style diseases Coordinator - Dr (Mrs.) Geeta Mohan
• Forest Ecosystem and Global warming Coordinator- Dr. Aruna Kumari. J
