Department of Statistics

Statistics is the science of collection, organization, and interpretation of data. The Deaprtment of Statistics at Mount Carmel College deals with all aspects of Statistics, including the planning of data collection, in terms of the design of surveys and experiments.

Be it Medicine, Psychology, Astronomy, Industry, Finance, Management, Statistics plays a very important role to make inferences about sampled populations. This course aims at providing the student with an in-depth knowledge with statistics and its applications. It also aims at training the student in logical reasoning, using statistical software and sharpening their analytical skills.

Statistics is offered in various combinations at the undergraduate level. They are:
•    CMS – Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics.
•    EMS – Economics, Mathematics, Statistics.

Students who wish to apply for either of the courses mentioned above must fulfill the following criterion to be eligible to apply for the courses.
1.    Student should have passed the Pre-University or an equivalent course with Basic Mathematics / Business Mathematics / Applied Mathematics as one of the optional subjects.

2.    Candidates taking Statistics as one of the subjects in the B. Sc. Course should have Mathematics as another optional subject.

The department offers a certificate course in Statistical Analysis through Computers, which is exclusively for the final year students. The course is taught through student lectures, class seminars, quizzes, surveys on current topics of interest and projects.
