Microorganisms may be tiny, but this relatively new science of microbiology is huge. Although microbes were directly observed over three hundred years ago, the field of microbiology can be said to be in its infancy compared to older biological disciplines such as zoology and botany.
Only about one percent of all of the microbe species on Earth have been studied. Therefore it has an enormous potential for advancement and it is certainly one of the fastest growing fields in terms of career-growth.
The department hopes to create in their students, a holistic understanding of the science so as to train them effectively for research and development.
Undergraduate Programmes: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in the following combinations: • CBM – Chemistry, Botany and Microbiology • CZM – Chemistry, Zoology and Microbiology
Credit Courses: A number of optional courses are offered yearly that offer students certain credits, which will be added to the final portfolio of students. The students are given authenticated certificates by the college for taking up these courses after college hours and passing the exam. The courses are as follows: • Biochemical characterization of bacteria isolated from mine tailings • Testing of water samples for portability • Detection of mutagenecity of cosmetics • Structure and Biochemistry of a cell (for students from computer science and statistics background)

Microbiology Today and Tomorrow The study of Microbiology helps people to observe, examine and manipulate microorganisms. This provides a much needed understanding of the occurrence of emerging diseases and their treatment. It is also essential for the research of the uses of microbes in many fields of life including industry, food, pharmaceuticals, and environment and so on.
Career Opportunities: Students studying Microbiology can opt for a career in • Teaching • Research industries • Pharmaceutical industries • Food & dairy industries • Research & Development departments • Agricultural departments • Quality control departments of Bio-technology companies and diagnostic laboratories.
Higher Studies: Students who have finished their BSc in Microbiology can opt to pursue an MSc degree, an integrated PhD, a PhD or an MS abroad. Since 2000, at least 6 students of Mount Carmel College have been selected from the Microbiology Dept for the PhD programs offered at IISC (Indian Institute of Science). Students from the department are accepted to reputed institutions all over India as well as abroad
Achievements and Famous Alumni of Mount Carmel • Work done in 'Microbial Physiology' was published in a national journal in 2010. • Dr Radha Krishnakumar is currently a scientist at the J. Craig Venter Institute in Rockville, Maryland, USA. She graduated from Mount Carmel College in 1996 majoring in Chemistry, Zoology and Microbiology. • Dr Hema Vaidyanathan graduated from MCC with a degree in Chemistry, Zoology and Microbiology in 1994. She completed her PhD in Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA in Cell and Developmental Biology in 2004. She has also carved a niche for herself in the field of media and communication by developing and writing scripts for a television show aired on National Geographic Channel, writing a parenting column in Hoot’s Children’s Magazine and so on.
