Department of Mathematics

Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns, formulate new conjectures, and establish truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen definitions.

Established in 1968, Mount Carmel’s Department of Mathematics offers courses in graduate and post-graduate mathematics. The main objective of the Department of Mathematics is to sharpen the mathematical skills, inculcating aptitude for research in mathematics and to train the students to meet the challenges of the dynamis subject.

FERMAT:
The Mathematics Association run by the Department organizes many activities every year. Some of the activities of the Association include:
•    A forum consisting of interactive sessions, collaborations and discussions

•    Lecture competitions conducted in the month of July

•    Student activities during 'Fresher's week' and 'Cul week' with Sudoku, treasure hunt, Math quiz, crossword, dumb charades etc.

In addition, Department activities include:
•    Conducted a community based programme where students of second year teach the basics of mathematics to children of the underprivileged section of society.

•    Installation and expansion of MATLAB with Symbolic Math Tool Box which is useful in mathematical computations. It exposes students to the use of technology. Such software is particularly useful for project work in various disciplines.

•    Field trip to institutes like HAL museum, RRI etc.

•    Seminars and special lectures by eminent mathematicians from reputed institutions like TIFR and IISC.

Mount Carmel has always been the forerunner of constructive changes in academics to help generations enrich knowledge and enhance skills to match the pace of the world
