Sociology in Mount Carmel College is concerned with imparting knowledge about social issues, the evolution of society, the trends and changes in society, research methods, techniques to understand the current social phenomena and other real world issues.
Being a women's college the department gives priority to women's issues, it provides the opportunity to learn the sociology of gender and the biasness and discrimination on the basis of gender.
The course gives equal importance on both practical and theoretical knowledge and students are constantly encouraged to work with NGO’s .They are required to make documentaries and conduct social surveys and research. The Department also undertakes field visits to villages and tribal areas and Industrial visits to study employer and employee relations and working conditions.

Under the Bangalore University system, each degree student has to study 3 core subjects. Sociology if offered as part of the following combinations:
• PES - Political Science, Economics, Sociology • PYES - Psychology, Economics, Sociology • HES - History, Economics, Sociology • CFS - Communication Studies, French, Sociology
The course follows the semester system, and comprises of a total of 6 semesters (3years). Each semester deals with different modules in the subject. The students are tested by means of the Continuous Internal Evaluation system, which includes tests, projects and assignments. Each semester is concluded with the end semester examinations.
