Department of Sanskrit

Under the Bangalore University each student studies three main subjects at the undergraduate level. Students can opt for Sanskrit or any other language subject, only if they are already familiar with the subject in their pre-university. The language is studied only in the first two years of the undergraduate level except for the course Bachelor of Business Administration, where they study the language subject only for the first year.

The two year degree course has graded syllabus comprising language component (grammar) and literature common for all. Arts and science students learn literary heritage comprising a brief study of the contents of the Vedas, Upanishads, puranas, epics, lyrics, prose literature, champukavyas and dramas.

Commerce students learn topics related to their subject like tax, toll, account general's duties and types of documents including income and expenditure cart etc.

Academic activities include projects related to their combination and Sanskrit, e.g. Sanskrit and Commerce, Sanskrit and Psychology etc. An exhibition of the projects is held in college and articles based on the projects are published in the college magazine. Students also enact the plays prescribed in the syllabus.

These activities help the students to take up research projects in future. Students are encouraged to attend seminars and quiz on related topics like Sanskrit and Science.

The Sanskrit Department has also been conducting basic and advanced credit courses in Sanskrit since 2000 and in foreign languages like German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Indian medicine, musicology etc.
