Psychology is offered under the following combinations: 1. PyES – Psychology, Economics, Sociology 2. PyEJ – Psychology, Optional English, Journalism 3. PyEE – Psychology, Economics, Optional English 4. PyEC – Psychology, Optional English, Communication Studies A brief overview: The Department of Psychology aims at giving its students a basic foundation in the subject, and also giving an exposure to a few of the areas in Psychology. In the undergraduate programme, Psychology is studied as one of the three majors.
In the first year, the student has papers on General Psychology, in the second year Developmental Psychology, and in the third year the student has to take Industrial Psychology as a compulsory paper and either Health Psychology or Abnormal Psychology as an elective paper.
Along with these, in each of the six semesters the student has a paper in Experimental Psychology along with a working knowledge of Statistics.
The student is assessed each semester on the basis of two internal assessments, one project, assignments, and the end of semester examinations.
The Department of Psychology offers two credit courses:
- ‘Psychology for Living’ --- 30 hours
- ‘Soft Skills’ ---- 30 hours
Student Activities:
- Guest speakers address the students on various topics related to psychology, throughout the semester.
- Final year students visit special schools, halfway homes, hospices as part of their co-curricular activities.
- The Department organizes seminars and workshops on various subareas in Psychology.
- Students participate in paper presentations, debates, and other competitions at various inter-collegiate Psychology Fests.
- An annual ‘Psychology Fest’ is organised by the Department of Psychology.
- The Department organises an educational tour for the final semester students.
- Interested students participate in the minor research projects and surveys carried out by the Department.
- A Psychology newsletter ‘Psyched’ is published by the Department every year.
Workshops and Seminars:
The Department of Psychology is constantly involved in organizing events and attending workshops which benefit both students as well as the faculty. The events of academic year 2007-2008 include:
1. 13th March, 2008 - A talk was conducted by Professor Jacob Raju on ‘Hypnotic Communication’. The talk was attended by students and teachers.
2. 12th February, 2008 - Ms. Vimala from the department of Zoology gave a talk on personal experience with cancer.
3. 5th February, 2008 – Dr. Govind Babu from KIMS (Kerela Institute of Medical Sciences) gave a talk on cancer.
4. 30th January, 2008 – Dr. Shalini from the United Nations Organization, AIDS foundation, gave a talk on AIDS.
5. 9th-11th January, 2008 – Mrs. M. Sumathi Bopaiya from the department of Psychology attended an international conference on Counseling and Psychotherapy, organized by Montford College. She also presented a paper on “Mentoring practices at Mount Carmel College – an evaluation.”
6. 1st-3rd October, 2007 – Sr. M. Arpana from the department of Psychology participated in the 8th National Conference of Catholic Psychologists at Ryshivara, Mangalore.
7. 28th-29th September, 2007 – Mrs. M. Sumathi Bopaiya attended the National Summit on quality in education by CII (Confederation of Indian Institutions) at NIMHANS.
8. 14TH September, 2007 – The Minister of External Affairs was the guest of honor at ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations). He spoke on “How to cope with Culture Shock”.
9. August, 2007 – The final year students went on an Industrial trip to Kodaikanal. They visited a cotton mill near Madurai, and a Polio Home at Kodaikanal. The trip was organized to make students understand the structure and functions of an industry and to improve group dynamics.
10. 26th-28th July, 2007 – Mrs. Leila Ann Verghese attended an International Conference on Psychology in Mental Health at NIMHANS.
