Journalism can be defined as the collection, verification, reporting and analysis of information regarding current events including people, issues etc. The main activity of journalism is the reporting of events by stating and explaining the significance and impact of the event. Journalism exists in a number of media: newspaper, television, radio, magazines and the internet.
The Department of Journalism of Mount Carmel College helps students understand and learn the theoretical and practical aspects of Journalism that will give them a strong base in reporting, editing, technical writing, documentary etc.
Journalism is offered in two combinations for students to choose from, as per their preference. The combinations offered are:
1. PyEJ- Psychology, Optional English and Journalism. While optional English strengthens the foundation of students in terms of language and literature, psychology helps students in being well equipped to handle people and other aspects of human behavior.
2. HJTT- History, Journalism and Travel and Tourism. History helps students in strengthening their knowledge about the origin and evolution of various cultures, giving them a strong hold on geo- political issues. Travel journalism by itself is a diverse field and is currently in a lot of demand.
Students are qualified to take up Journalism after a round of entrance test and personal interview.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES: The students are given several opportunities to put their theoretical knowledge into practical use by engaging themselves in various projects and seminars.
- 'FOR NOW' is a newsletter brought out by the final years twice every semester. It publishes articles written by the first and second year students. During the inter- collegiate cultural fest ‘Cul-Ah’ the journalism students wrote articles and published newsletters on all three days of the fest.
- The first year students are engaged in putting up articles on the news bulletin which is updated every week.
- The second years and final years make documentary films on the topic of their choice. For example: The final years made a documentary on "ECO-FRIENDLY CAMPUS".
- Students are encouraged to intern in various media houses or at other organizations depending on the subjects they study in a particular semester. Hence, internships are made compulsory from the second year.
- The journalism department in association with the NGO 'Reach'organized a seminar on health reporting on the 19th of January.

CERTIFICATE COURSES: Students are also offered various certificate courses to enhance their knowledge and experience about the different aspects of Journalism. This is an integral part of journalism and students have to attend a minimum number of hours to earn credits and receive their certificates. Certificate courses offered by the department of journalism are:
- CAMPUS TO CORPORATE:A course that provides the students with an insight into the corporate world and trains them in work ethics, presentation skills etc., required to survive the corporate companies.
- EDITING SOFTWARE: A course stretched over the period of 3 years by the end of which the students will have a strong hold on designing and editing.
1st Year: Coral draw and designing. 2nd Year: Sound editing and flash. 3rd Year: Premium pro and after effects.
- ADVANCED PRINT: A course that focuses on feature writing and layout, at the end of which students work together to publish a magazine.
A course on photography offered by the department of Communications is also open to the Journalism students.

GUEST FACULTY: Students are also trained by professionals coming from diverse fields like reporters, script writers, editors, film makers etc., who familiarize them and give them an insight into the current trends in their respective fields.
1. C.K Meena - a well known reporter for the Deccan Herald and The Hindu. She also taught at the Asian college of Journalism and Manipal Institute of Communications and has been a regular guest faculty at our college. She trains students in editing and in bettering their reporting skills.
2. Dakshin Murthy- A freelance writer for The Hindu. His lectures are based on International Relations which includes world politics, globalization etc.
3. Sania Farooqui- Scriptwriter for NDTV Business line and currently a freelance writer in London. She deals with the different aspects of news broadcast and news room handling.
4. Susheela Nair: A travel writer, photographer and consultant. She trains students in freelance journalism.
After a bachelor's degree in Journalism, students are open to most of the technical and non-technical aspects of journalism like reporting, sound & video editing, designing etc. A few career options are listed below:
1. Print media- includes reporters, photo journalists, editors, designers etc. 2. Technical Writing and web journalism. 3. Media Management. 4. Documentary Film making- Script writers, sound editors, video editors etc. 5. TV and Radio broadcasting.
