French is offered both as a general subject as well as an optional, core one.
- Mount Carmel is currently the only college to offer Optional French as a core subject in Karnataka. It is studied in combination with Sociology and Communication Studies.
- As a language course, French can be studied over 2 years, along with compulsory English.

Optional French About the Course CFS is an Under Graduate Degree course for 3 years, which is divided into 6 semesters. In the course of the 3 years the student has to do 8 papers which will involve various aspects such as tourism, translation, writing skills, culture and civilization, literature so as to provide a wide skill base. There is also a practical component with each theory module, which will facilitate application of skill.
Eligibility This course is not open to beginners. The applicant needs to fulfill one of the following criterion:
- Studied the French language for a minimum of any 3 school years
- Have a 2A (DELF) certificate from Alliance Francaise
- Be from a country where French is an official language

There will be an oral and written entrance test conducted. Admissions will strictly be as per merit. Beginners can write the test by enrolling for a crash course beforehand.

Career Options The course is designed to prepare the student for the growing industries of Travel & Tourism, Translation / Interpretation, Writing and Teaching, without having to take up add-on courses to achieve the same. The advent of Multinationals in India (and in Bangalore in particular) provides added scope for absorption.
General French French is offered as a second language course for 2 years, which is divided into 4 semesters. The syllabus and evaluation is designed to hone both writing and speaking skills.
Departmental Activities
- Apart from the various intra-collegiate competitions, Mount Carmel College is the only college in Bangalore which has an inter-collegiate French Fest – FRANCO FEEL where different colleges fight it out at various competitions like scrabble, role play, music, creative writing, poetry recitation etc
- Mount Carmel College also hosts its annual French Food Fest -GOURMET , where the French students along with their teachers put together an exotic French menu which has a wide array of mouth watering French dishes which are put up for sale to the entire college.
- Mount Carmel College also offers a basic credit course in French that is open to outsiders as well. The department of French will soon be starting an advanced credit course in French.
