Department of Economics

The main objective of the Department of Economics is to provide students a strong academic foundation in Economic Theory as well as provide them the necessary skills to apply theoretical knowledge to analyze current economic news, problems, issues, events and policies.


The Department has introduced well designed courses for students of Science, Commerce, Management and Arts at the undergraduate level with the support of dedicated and qualified Faculty. They have attempted to employ teaching and evaluation methods to enhance easier learning. Extra efforts are made to update knowledge of students through projects and assignments. The syllabus is revised annually and new courses introduced when essential. Students are encouraged to take part in inter-collegiate competitions and co-curricular activities and every possible encouragement and support is given to students to pursue higher studies in India and abroad. All those students who find it difficult to cope with academic challenges are assisted through special tutorial classes. The department also offers innovative credit courses to provide extended education and promote inter disciplinary learning.

The BA course is designed to provide a wide range of higher education and career opportunities to students in varied fields like Media, Banking. Teaching, Research, Travel and Tourism, Psychology, English language, Law, Indian civil services , MBA, BPO and the NGO sector.

    Students who opt for this combination are required to have a strong foundation in Mathematics and Statistics. Quantitative techniques applicable to Economics are adopted in teaching and learning methods.


Commerce Combination

    Economics is taught to these students in the first and second semester in order to foster managerial abilities in them by highlighting the scope of economics in decision making.

Credit Courses: A number of credit courses are offered by the Department. These courses prepare students to face competitive exams like CAT. They also give them hands on experience with entrepreneurship. The courses offered are as follows:

Activities: The Department of Economics not only encourages academic activities but also stresses on the need for co-curricular activities which include the following:

Economics Newsletter: The Economics Newsletter is a new addition to the various activities undertaken by the Department. It is slated for release in February, 2011 and from then on will be published on a quarterly basis. The editorial team consists of a group of students assisted by the Economics faculty and subject experts. It covers Economics news, events, interviews and thought provoking articles on current affairs and issues affecting the local, national and global economy.This Newsletter also contain crosswords and illustrations to capture the attention of readers.

Organizing Exhibitions cum Sales: TThe department organizes an annual exhibition cum sale with the active involvement of entrepreneurship students of fifth semester. The students are expected to display products made by them, like food products, fashion jewellery, designer candles, jute bags and files, greeting cards and various other items which are marketed in the college to provide practical experience in product development and marketing and in general hone business skills.

Budget Presentation: The students are trained to analyze and present the Union and State Government budgets every year in the college to enable practical understanding and application of Economics as a subject. It is a much anticipated popular event attended by students and faculty from all disciplines.
