The classrooms at Mount Carmel College have a number of large windows, ensuring that in a sunny day, there is enough natural light to avoid the use of electric lights. Skylights in certain locations of the classroom buildings as well as the hostel also provide natural light during the daytime.

Garbage Segregation

Garbage segregation

Waste bins that have been placed at strategic locations throughout the college campus are separated into food, paper and plastic. The paper and plastic garbage is sent out for recycling, and the food is dumped into a compost pit.

Compost Pits

Behind the college buildings are the compost pits, where easily biodegradable garbaage (such as food and leaves) is dumped. Here, food that has been thrown away as well as leaves that are swept from the college campus are dumped to provide nutrition so the soil.

Solar Heating

Solar panels placed on the rooftops of various campus buildings build up a storehouse of energy during the daytime. This energy is used to provide the light and hot water in the hostel and convent during the night.

College Canteen

College Canteen

The college canteen provides food and only in steel plates and cups, instead of disposable plastic. This helps keep the campus clean and also prevents unnecessary harm to the environment. The canteen also has a ban on serving snacks or drinks in plastic bottles, with snacks in being provided paper bags and drinks only in tetra packs.

When the college was built, care was taken not to chop down the old, large trees, and they were integrated into the college as a part of the campus, and stand tall even today. In addition to this, the college also maintains a variety of on-campus plant life, both potted and otherwise, keeping the campus cool even in the summer heat.

Gardens

The college maintains botanical and herbal gardens where plants are grown. In support of the environment, guests to the college are gifted ornamental potted plants grown in these gardens, as opposed to cut flowers.

Rainwater Harvesting

The college has rainwater harvesting pits, to prevent water from going to waste during periods of rainfall. These are placed at various locations on the college campus, and are properly covered to avoid having stagnant water in the open.
